Society of Illustrators, New York
At the invitation of Director Arabella Leopold, The Covent Gardener travelled to New York for a special appearance at the historic Society of Illustrators. Founded in 1901, the Society stands as the oldest institution of its kind in the city—a space The New Yorker aptly described as a “vital home for illustration in a digital age.”
The event, titled Cover Stories, took the form of an intimate conversation between Jeannine Saba and Ruth Martin. Together, they traced the magazine’s visual legacy through the remarkable artists who have graced its covers, from the whimsical lines of Sir Quentin Blake to the iconic graphic mastery of Milton Glaser.
The discussion moved beyond simple aesthetics, exploring the deep-rooted mechanics of collaboration and the nuances of visual storytelling. In an era dominated by screens, the talk served as a beautiful reminder of the quiet, enduring cultural power found in a printed cover
VISO in Ghent, Belgium
At VISO Mariakerke, one of Flanders’ premier graphic design schools, we shared the story of The Covent Gardener with 45 seventeen-year-old students. In a world increasingly dominated by the digital, we spoke about the tangible importance of community and the unique weight of print.
With a student body of over 600 and a printing department housing industrial machinery on a scale rarely seen in an educational setting, VISO is a testament to the future of design. It was a privilege to discuss why places like Covent Garden matter, and why the craft of making remains so vital.
